Frequently Asked Questions

OpticZoom 5x Telephoto Lens

How good is the image quality when using the OpticZoom ?
We think that it is superb and so do many of our satisfied customers.

It is the best value Telephoto Lens available to digital camera users, being multi-camera usable and producing excellent quality images at very high powers on most equipment.

The final results will obviously vary depending on which camcorder / digital camera is being used, however this is equally to do with the camcorder / digital camera as with the OpticZoom Lens.

See the many sample images we have on the website and make up your own mind.

I know that the OpticZoom is a 5x lens but how much power will it give me when used with my camera / camcorder ?

When attached to the host camera the OpticZoom Lens will magnify whatever zoom setting the camera is set to by a factor of 5x.

Therefore at a 1x camera zoom setting you would get 5x, at a 2x camera zoom setting you would get 10x, at a 3x camera zoom setting you would get 15x and at a 4x camera zoom setting you would get 20x.

On all cameras, at the lower camera zoom settings there will be vignetting ( edge / corner darkening on the image ).

Does the EagleEye OpticZoom actually 'zoom' like zoom lenses for SLR cameras or is it a fixed 5x lens ?
The OpticZoom is a fixed 5x magnification lens. It does not itself perform any zooming action, as is commonly associated with traditional SLR camera lenses.

On SLR cameras the camera itself does not have any zooming capability, this is done by the lens. On most digital cameras, apart from the professional range of cameras that can use SLR lenses, it is the other way round.

Why does the OpticZoom Lens have a fine focus adjustment ?

This is to allow the OpticZoom Lens to be fine tuned to match the host camera and the camera zoom setting that is being used to give the best focus and image quality possible with many different cameras.

The name OpticZoom is a bit confusing then....isn't it ?
The name is certainly not intended to confuse, it is just a name, like e.g. Volkswagen Beetle.

The confusion may exist because SLR terminology is being interpreted when it is Digital Camera technology that is being described.

When using the OpticZoom Lens with your digital camera you are benefiting from an entirely optically zoomed image, as opposed to a far inferior one that would result if produced using digital zoom.

What is the equivalent power when using the OpticZoom 5x Lens with my digital camera compared to the SLR mm powers that one sees quoted ?
This is commonly referred to as the ESLR rating ( equivalent SLR rating ).

As each individual camera has it's own ESLR range it is simply a case of multiplying that by 5x to calculate the ESLR rating for your camera when using the OpticZoom Lens.

For example if your camera has a 115mm maximum zoom, then using the OpticZoom Lens this would effectively become 575mm ( 115mm x 5 ).

Can the OpticZoom 5x Lens really be used handheld ?
When working at these high magnifications the best results will always be obtained using some type of support ( for example a tripod / monopod / resting bag etc. ) and also a Shutter Release Cable.

About 80% of our website sample images have all been taken handheld and many of our customers use the lens handheld so the answer is definitely a big YES, but it very much depends on factors such as light availability, shutter speed and of course how steady you are when taking photographs.

Surely with such a high power lens it must really restrict the light entering the camera and make it impossible to take photographs in all but the brightest of conditions ?
Well, actually NO. The OpticZoom Lens will in most cases only reduce the f-stop at worst, by about 1.

In fact in certain circumstances it actually gathers more light than the native camera lens alone.

However, as with all things it does have limits and so the more light that is available the more successful the image is likely to be.

What is the close focusing distance of the OpticZoom 5x Lens ?
This is relatively dependant upon the host camera capabilities. As a guide, with the host camera set into Macro mode - close focussing is around 12 - 15 feet.

Can I use the OpticZoom 5x Lens for Macro work ??
Yes, most certainly. The OpticZoom Lens is extraordinarily flexible.

Simply by using inexpensive 37mm threaded Close-Up lenses screwed into the front of the OpticZoom you can reduce the close focus ability of the OpticZoom down to as close as 2 inches @ 15x magnification ( with a 3x zoom camera), depending on which Close-Up lens combinations you attach.

Generally, neither the image quality or light gathering are significantly affected either.

Can I increase the power of the OpticZoom 5x Lens
Yes. Additional lenses can be screwed into the front of the OpticZoom to increase it's power. For example by screwing a 2x teleconverter lens into the front you effectively double the power.

Different lens combinations will interact differently in terms of image quality and performance and this is also dependant upon attributes of the host camera as well.

The resulting power using a 2x add-on lens in the front of the OpticZoom 5x Lens with a 3x zoom camera is a whopping 30x magnification.

We have produced a special OpticZoom Lens Tripod Mount to assist supporting the additional weight when these configurations are used.

At this sort of magnification, whilst in bright light it is amazingly still possible to use handheld and get good results, although the use of a tripod or monopod is a very serious recommendation for most people.

Also extra care and attention should be exercised when using these heavier lens configurations to avoid causing damage to the equipment.

Is the OpticZoom 5x Lens very difficult to focus ?

The lens has been designed with ease of use in mind, it does not have complex markings.

The basic method of focusing is to set the camera autofocus on and put the camera into Macro mode. Point the lens at an object and rough focus the OpticZoom Lens using the manual focus ring, then lock the camera autofocus onto the object ( usually by half depressing the camera shutter button ).The image should then be in good focus, very minor further adjustments can be made using the manual focus ring if felt necessary before taking the shot.

This method works on most cameras, but not all and is useful for subjects upto about 120 feet away.

Alternatively place the camera into manual focus mode and set to infinity, then adjust the manual focus ring until the image appears sharpest in the LCD this method is particularly useful for subjects over 120 feet away.

Surprisingly many people receive their lens, put it on the camera and almost immediately set off for a protracted photoshoot. They return home only to find that the vast majority of their images are out of focus and are then disheartened and disappointed. Although the OpticZoom Lens is easy to use, as with most things, a little practice is needed to get consistently good results but this practice will pay huge dividends to your enjoyment of the equipment.

We suggest that before you rush out and take hundreds of photos you spend a little time practising with your camera and the OpticZoom Lens in a controlled way.

There is no point making life unnecessarily difficult for yourself during the familiarisation process, so do this in your garden on a nice day, using a tripod and take some photos of a static object, say 40 feet away.

Take a series of no more than 10 photographs following the guidance above and paying particular attention to what the images look like in your LCD screen when you take each shot. Then immediately afterwards review the results on your PC. You may find that some shots are in focus and some are slightly blurred - try to recall what the image on the LCD screen looked like in the shots that came out well.

Keep repeating this process until your are confident ( when you achieve good focus on most of the shots, most of the time you will be ready to venture out ). By doing it in this way you will quickly learn to recognise how the image should look in the LCD screen in order to get the best results.

Practice makes perfect !! and you will soon be consistently taking some great shots.

Will the OpticZoom 5x Lens work on all cameras ?
Yes, the lens will work on all cameras, provided it can be fitted. The results produced will of course vary depending on which camera it is being used with. The main issue being how much vignetting ( edge darkening ) will result to the image.
Will the OpticZoom 5x Lens work on video camcorders ?
Yes, the lens will work on video camcorders, provided it can be fitted. The results produced will of course vary depending on which camcorder it is being used with.
The main issue being how much vignetting ( edge darkening ) will result to the image.

Generally, at camcorder zoom settings upto approx 5x there will be image vignetting ( edge / corner darkening ). As the zoom setting is increased, on most camcorders the vignetting on the image clears. On some higher zoom capability camcorders ( e.g. 21x ) it may re-appear again towards the top end of the zoom range.

How does the OpticZoom 5x Lens fit onto my camera or camcorder ??

The OpticZoom Lens has 37mm male threads which screw into threads available on your camera or camcorder.

Some cameras / camcorders obviously have different sizes of threads and to cater for this various Special Lens Thread Adapter Rings and Step-Rings are used to match the sizes up.

Some cameras do not provide lens threads at all and for some of these we have Lens Thread Adapter Tubes available that will allow the OpticZoom Lens to be fitted.

There are some cameras that simply do not have either facility available and unfortunately the OpticZoom Lens cannot be fitted directly to these particular models.

However, it is still possible to use the OpticZoom Lens with these cameras by utilising our new DigiMount Adapter ( Type L2 ) and CamMount. When using the OpticZoom Lens connected in this way we do not suggest handheld use and our Lens Tripod Mount will allow you to use a tripod.

Will there be any vignetting ( edge and corner darkening ) when using the OpticZoom 5x Lens ?

Almost every add-on lens that is fitted to a digital camera will induce vignetting.

The extent varies depending on a number of factors, the main considerations being the add-on lens being used, the camera zoom setting being used and the host camera itself.

Usually the higher the power of the add-on lens the worse the vignetting is and also the lower the camera zoom setting used the worse the vignetting.

In most cases the OpticZoom Lens produces significantly less vignetting than low power 2x add-on lenses.

Placing the camera into Aperture Priority mode and using as wide an aperture as possible ( say f2 ) helps minimise this effect. This also has the benefit of giving a faster shutter speed and enabling easier handheld results.

We have a very large number of sample images showing the sort of results you can expect from various cameras.

See our camera compatibility issue page for known problems.

Xtend-a-View Pro - LCD Sunshade & Viewer
Why do I need an Xtend-a-View Pro - LCD Viewer & Sunshade ?

The Xtend-a-View Pro - LCD Viewer & Sunshade allows you to see the camera LCD even in bright sunlight, without glare.

When used in conjunction with the OpticZoom 5x Telephoto Lens, it assists in manually focussing the Lens and also allows the camera to be held more traditionally and comfortably upto the eye rather than out at arms length, which helps greatly with stability.

It is invaluable when Digiscoping......

Does the Xtend-a-View Pro have a diopter adjustment ?
The MINI version does not have diopter adjustment.

The VARIABLE version does have a diopter adjustment.
How does the Xtend-a-View Pro attach to my camera ?
There are 5 main methods that can be used.

1. Firstly the viewers are supplied with a neck cord and so one can simply have the viewer around the neck and handhold it upto the LCD screen when needed. Some rubberised material is supplied to attach to the viewer to avoid scratching the LCD screen.

2. The most common method is to use the supplied, thin sticky-back Velcro strips which are placed around the left, top and right sides of the camera LCD viewer perimeter ( on the camera body not the LCD screen itself ). Corresponding Velcro pieces are placed on the front face of the viewer. The two are simply placed together and the viewer is held in place. By gently pulling on the viewer the Velcro seal is broken and the viewer removed.

3. The third method relates only to the Nikon CP990 / CP995 / CP4500 cameras and involves the use of our Mk2 Wing Bracket or Wing4500 Bracket. These Brackets have a locating hole into which a modified Xtend-a-View Pro ( it has a small strut attached to it ) is located and secured in position using a small thumbscrew. This avoids the need to use Velcro.

4. Also available is a mounting bracket ( Xtend-a-Mount ) for use with some of the Olympus Camedia range of cameras.

5. The Xtend-a-Mount OMNI is a universal fit Mounting Bracket.
I have tried other sunshades, but they were useless why is the Xtend-a-View Pro going to be any better ?
The Xtend-a-View Pro fully covers the LCD panel and therefore there are no problems with penetrating light. The optical lens in the viewer allows the eye to focus on the LCD at such close proximity, which would otherwise be impossible.

Does the Xtend-a-View Pro fit all camera LCD screens ?

We have 3 versions of the Xtend-a-View Pro i.e. the VARIABLE, WIDE and MINI and these will cater for the vast majority of available cameras.

There are only a few cameras that need the WIDE version ( mainly from the Sony range ).

You can check the website compatibility list to see which one you need for your camera. If you do not see your camera model listed or are unsure on exactly what you need just email us on info@eagleeyeuk.com for assistance.

On a very small number of cameras there may be a very minimal amount ( a few millimetres ) of the LCD screen not viewable.

On The Nikon CP950 camera, because of the curving body shape around a part of the LCD viewer the Xtend-a-View Pro fitting will not be absolutely flat and square to the LCD screen. This nevertheless does not prevent the Xtend-a-View Pro from being very effectively used with this camera.

The top and left perimeter edges around the camera LCD can be raised slightly (about 1.5mm) to a height similar to the right hand side, using the rubber material which is supplied before the Velcro is attached and this will almost entirely compensate for the problem.

A great many of these viewers have been sold to CP950 owners who use them daily on their cameras without problem .

When using the Xtend-a-View Pro with my camera LCD I can start to see the small dots ( pixels ) that make up the image on the camera LCD screen. Is this normal ??

The images that you see on the camera LCD are made up of pixels, which are essentially small coloured squares joined together to form the images. The number of pixels that are used to make up these images on the camera LCD are relatively few ( low resolution ). The images on the camera LCD look quite sharp to the eye only because the LCD screen is so small that the human eye cannot really see the pixels forming the images.

The Xtend-a-View Pro itself has a high quality glass optical lens which provides crystal clear and sharp viewing results. The lens has a 2x magnification power and this is necessary to allow the eye to be able focus so close to the camera LCD screen. If this 2x lens was not there the Xtend-a-View Pro would have to be about 6" long to get your eye far enough away from the camera LCD screen to allow it to focus properly.

When viewing the camera LCD screen with the Xtend-a-View Pro the pixels making up the images are magnified by 2x and this creates an effect similar to looking at newspaper print through a magnifying glass.

As well as seeing the overall image, you can also begin to see the small pixels actually making up the image. This is obviously only seen on the camera LCD screen and does not appear on the actual photograph itself

Because the camera autofocus system ensures that your photographs are focussed properly this effect has no relevance to the actual focusing of the camera itself and is not a defect in the Xtend-a-View Pro or the camera LCD screen.

The main purpose of the Xtend-a-View Pro is as a Sunshade to stop the glare on your LCD screen so that you can see the images, both to compose and review your shots and also when changing various menu settings.

When used together with the OpticZoom 5x Telephoto Lens the ability to be able to see the LCD pixels slightly is very beneficial as it helps when manually focussing the OpticZoom 5x Telephoto Lens . The same benefit is obtained when used for Digiscoping.

Lens Thread Adapter Tubes
Why do you have to use Spacer Rings with some of these Lens Thread Adapter Tubes ?
Some manufacturers have designed their Lens Thread Adapter Tubes in such a way that they are only fully compatible with their own lenses, without problems.

The most common situation is that if one uses a different lens inserted into the Lens Thread Adapter Tube, then when the camera is turned on and the camera lens extends it will touch against the attached add-on lens.

To overcome this the use of a spacer ring gives enough clearance so that this will not happen.

Can the Casio QV3000EX Lens Thread Adapter Tube be removed from the camera after use ?

The adapter has been designed to remain attached to the camera most of the time and whilst it can be removed and refitted, we do not recommend that this is how it is used.

Continual removal and refitting will, in time, affect the very snug and secure fitting which has been provided in it's design and may also mark / damage the camera lens shrouding onto which it fits.

We suggest that the adapter together with a 49mm clip-in lens cap should be left on the camera permanently as it provides great protection against accidental damage to the sensitive camera lens and lens extending mechanism.

This item has now been discontinued.

General
Is there somewhere that I can see and test your products before purchasing ?

Our products are only available directly from us. There is nowhere that you can see or test them before purchasing other than at our Open Days held each Saturday ( details ) where you can see and try out our products.

Alternatively, we do attend many of the camera shows and Birdfairs held throughout the year.

We also provide as many sample images / customer testimonials and as much information as we can on our website to assist you making a purchase decision.

We are also more than happy to receive individual questions not covered in this FAQ section, either by e-mail or telephone (UK) 01474 871219.

We will always provide you with a prompt answer which is courteous, honest and as comprehensive as possible to your enquiry.

Additionally, we can also make a special appointment for you to visit us to try our products if this is of help to you.

Do you provide your goods on an approval basis so that I can return them if I am not completely happy with the results ?
The answer to this is No.

The reason for this is that once an item has been despatched by us and used, if it were to be returned we would not then 'clean it up' and send it out to another customer ( as many other companies seem only to happy to do ).

We are sure that as a customer, you would not be very happy to know that you have received an item, purchased by you as new, which has previously been sent out and used ( however lightly ) by someone else. By purchasing from us, you can always be assured that this will never be the case.

This is why we respectfully ask that you only make a purchase if you are sure that the product fits your requirements.
Can I track my order or check my order status ?
For International orders we use 2 main delivery schemes. One of these does not have tracking available, the other one does have public tracking available but there is no detailed information. If you check the tracking site it simply says 'despatched and on its way'.

Please allow the full 10 working days for delivery of your order before you contact us. If it has not arrived after this time, then contact us by email and we will have the carriers make detailed enquiries as to its whereabouts and advise you accordingly.

EagleEye OpticZooms holds all products in stock. This means that when you place an order it will be despatched either the same day or the next working day.

In all cases you can assume this to be the status of your order
. If for some exceptional reason an item is not available this will be advised on the website ordering page and we usually stop accepting orders for the out-of-stock item until we actually have more in.

I am not located in the UK but I am VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registered in my country which is part of the EU, can I purchase my goods without paying VAT ??

Yes you can, although in order to ensure the integrity of such transactions we have some requirements that need to be fulfilled before we will despatch an order within the EUC without charging VAT.

Firstly, we will need an original of your headed paper which shows the company / trading name and the VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registration number. This should be sent by post to our admin offices at Wentshaw Lodge, Fairseat, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN15 7LR.

Payment for the order must be clearly identifiable as having come from the VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registered company / person . Therefore in the case of an International Bankers Draft or Telegraphic Transfer some accompanying documentation from the bank must also be sent showing that the funds were drawn from the account of the VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registered company / person.

If a credit card is used, unless this is issued in the name of the VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registered company / person we will require a letter from the credit card company which confirms that the credit card is issued to the VAT ( EUC country equivalent ) registered company with the person who's name is on the credit card being an authorised signatory.

Delivery of the order will only be made to the address shown on the headed paper.

Do you ship worldwide ?

Yes, we do.
